The best place for a hydroponic system is somewhere with enough light, a stable surface, and easy access to water and power. Before you buy or build anything, look at the spot you have in mind.

Light

Plants need light to grow. A bright window can work for leafy greens and herbs, but a grow light gives steadier results, especially in winter or in a room with little daylight. See the lighting guide for more.

Space and surface

Choose a level, sturdy surface. Systems with a reservoir are heavy once they are full of water. Leave room to reach the plants, check the solution, and harvest.

Water and power

You will need to fill and top up the reservoir, so keep it close to a tap or a container you can carry easily. Pumps, timers and lights need a safe power source. Keep cables away from water.

Temperature and protection

Avoid spots that get very hot or very cold, and keep the system away from direct heat sources. Put a tray or towel under the system to catch spills, and keep pets and children away from the water and nutrients.
