Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to common questions. Each answer links to the guide with more detail.

What is hydroponic gardening?

Growing plants in a water-based nutrient solution instead of soil. The roots get the nutrients they need directly from the solution. See the guides.

Which system is best for a beginner?

Many beginners start with the Kratky method or a floating raft for leafy greens and herbs. Both are simple and need no pump.

Do I need a pump?

Not for the Kratky method. Drip, ebb and flow and some other systems usually use a pump and timer. The supplies guide lists what each system needs.

What pH should my nutrient solution be?

Many plants do well around pH 5.5 to 6.5. Test regularly and check the guidance for the plant you are growing. See pH and nutrients.

Do plants need grow lights?

It depends on the plant and where you are growing. Leafy greens and herbs need less light than fruiting plants. See lighting.

What can I grow hydroponically?

Leafy greens, herbs and many fruiting plants. See choosing plants to grow.

Why are my leaves turning yellow?

A common cause is a nutrient or pH problem. Start with the pH, then check the solution. See common problems and fixes.
